Projection

Attribution to another of feelings or impulses that are difficult to recognise as one’s own. The presumed internal process cannot simply be read from another person’s statement.

When this fits

Unwanted feelings or impulses appear attributed to another person with high certainty.
The attribution reduces self-conflict but escalates suspicion, blame, or rupture.
The content of the accusation resembles a disowned affect, wish, or fear.

When this may not fit

There is strong evidence that the other person is acting in the described way.
The belief is fixed, bizarre, or psychotic rather than relationally linked and affect-responsive.
The pattern is primarily shame, trauma mistrust, or negative core belief without disowned affect.
Alternative explanations to exclude: actual hostility, trauma-related vigilance, discrimination, cultural misunderstanding, psychotic symptoms and ordinary differences in perspective.

Short case example

A patient who feels angry after a rupture insists the clinician is angry and punitive, despite no clear evidence.

Translate the hypothesis into a testable target

Validate affect before interpretation
Explore evidence gently
Avoid premature confrontation
Establish the interpersonal facts and validate distress. Disagreement with a clinician is not evidence of projection. The concept does not independently justify a treatment, a personality diagnosis or dismissal of a complaint.

Validate the affect first, then gently compare evidence and invite curiosity about the internal feeling state.
